I'm glad to see photos from you again :) Hopefully this is the start of more!

Your eye follows the stalk downward and then the detail drops off so it throws off a little. Since the subject is the fern itself, having the stalk in the front half in the shadows and only partly focused really takes away from it.

Personally I think this would have been better in a horizontal setup to focus tighter on the bent part of the stalk, or you could simply crop it to narrow the focus better and cut out the extra stalk. Due to the aperture limitations of the lens that bare part from the other stalk intrudes into the picture and becomes a little distracting.

I like the idea and the aperture choice was correct for this composition. The parts of the subject that are in focus show crisp detail and edges and leaves. The bokeh is surprisingly uniform for the kit lens too.
