Finding Art In The Real World

Wednesday January 16th, 2013
Written by: KovoWolf

While on my Holiday vacation in Grants Pass Oregon to visit my parents and grandmother I ventured into a local comic shop. It was a really nice comic shop and had quiet a selection. I was browsing one of the isles when I came across not one but two comics side by side from Anthro artists here on DA!  It's pretty amazing and a humbling experience when you stumble across artists work from DeviantART out in the real world!  Especially artists you've been following for years! Congrats you two on your accomplishments and sharing your talent and imagination with the rest of us!

The comics I came across are "Lackadaisy" by tracyjb and "Nordguard - Book One  - Across Thin Ice" by screwbald and Tess Garman !

Are You An Anthro Artist With Work Published?

I would love to hear about it and feature you! Please post a link to your website and/or publication (ie: book, comic etc) in the comments below!

What was any art but a mould in which to imprison for a moment the shining elusive element which is life itself - life hurrying past us and running away, too strong to stop, too sweet to lose.  - Willa Cather

I got published, but it was for my fantasy dragon work, not anthro. Technically, one of the dragons published was anthro, but the other one was not. Here is the publication:

"DragonWorlds"

There's lots of stuff out there about it, but I'm not sure what you are looking for.....

Oh nice! I didn't know this :) I will keep this for future reference in regards to features and as well exposure to people who've been published in the real world! Anthro or not!

I think I've seen Lackadaisy in a local comic shop out here in the Bay Area (California). There was a "free comic book" day at a local shop. They handed out "previews" of some comics. I got a dark Crystal one with something else on it. It was something about a mouse, a hawk, a snake and a crab, I do believe.

Anyway, awesome to see different things make it to stores! :) Makes me want to really get started on my comic!

Basically there is a lot of anthro if you look at it closely - Disney is one big example. Then a lot of books for children and and and...

I mean with all this stuff happening on TV and in the cinemas and child literature - who'd be surprised that Anthro&Furry is such a popular subculture?

There are quite a lot of non-supporters who are all "giving animals human traits is unnatural and kinky" But they love Disney and other child entertainment with animals walking on two legs and such stuff...

Good to know that there are arists who also try to make Anthro stories more popular among grown ups ^^

Indeed :) A lot of people tend to forget that Disney creates a lot of "anthro" related work. Same with other TV show's and movies!

It's not that they "forget'" it it's more some kind of double standard or possibly they don't see Disney as "Anthro" because of all the kinky fandoms Anthro got some sort of fetish reputation and I admit I don't like anthro-p*rn while I play erotic Anthro RP stuffs myself but I usually don't give my character enourmous balls or enourmous members or oversized boobs. I guess those parts of the anthro community make people think all of it was like that and label it as kinky and since Disnes doesn'T do kinky stuffs they don'T consider it Anthro

My theory is a bit chaotic I admit...

Oooooh wow how cool!!!! I'll keep an eye out for one here in Portland!

I didn't know you lived in Oregon too :3

A friend of mine actually bought one of the comics of her favorite DA artist/author she found at a comic store. A few years ago. Unfortunately she never came out with a second one and stopped :/

They should deff. be in Portland, I would imagine, because Portland is a large city compared to Grants Pass ;D

If any anthro/furry artists deserve to have their stuff to published in the mainstream, it would have to be these two.

That's pretty awesome!
I've actually seen Lackadaisy a few times at multiple booth during our local comic and anime conventions, same goes for Blacksad. It's really great to see anthro material making its way into more mainstream venues. <333

Hopefully it leads into people taking a more serious look at the genre.

Anything I've had published is the property of the Canadian Department of National Defense and unfortunately can't be shared. xD

It would be a bit of a conundrum if they went even more mainstream and people started to pick up on that. Its one of the seriously limiting factors in the fandoms appeal, even if their stuff is outstanding.

i just hate the pornographic side of the fandom, hence why i left it a couple of months ago. It's sad as I see truly talented artists in the fandom but they dont get seen and usually its because they refuse to do any porn/fetish crap

Not true in my opinion; I've discovered a whole bunch of artists on FA that never (and a I mean, never) do porn, and they are extremely popular. I think that since the pornographic aspect stands out so much, it tends to obscure the majority talented artists that don't dabble in it... and those clean artists are doing just fine.

i have seen clean artists do well. But I have seen so many good artists, talented ones, just get ignored or if they have money issues, force themselves to do adult stuff to get commissions

People will do what they need to do to get an income. However, I really haven't seen any artists that I would call 'being ignored' due to non porno creation. Most of the porn artists produce low quality material, overwhelmingly soulless; frankly a lot of it is dreary and depressing.

exactly. Thats why i dont agree with the vast amount of it in the fandom as it has no meaning, no heart, no passion in it, its been made by someone trying to get a cheap buck from a dirty source, and it is poison...and it certainly isn't art

You can literally say the same thing of just about every fandom though. Some people are in it to have fun, some are in it to show off their art, some are in it to make a buck. You don't need to hang out with "pronz artists" Bengal, just stick with people whom you are comfortable with. I used to have much the same mindset as you do btw, which is why I held off on FA for years til I learned that a couple of friends in RL, and a bunch of artists I sincerely respect basically used FA as their home base.
